Marmot PreCip Rain Jacket Review

The Marmot PreCip rain jacket is an excellent waterproof, breathable jacket.

It is light and packable, making it easy to take on any trip where you expect "precip"-itation.

Marmot PreCip Jacket, Kesugi Ridge, Alaska

I've had mine for about 3 years and have been very happy with it.

The PreCip jacket is made with a single layer of material--no mesh liner to catch on your clothing.

Two large vertical pockets run from chest to above the waist and double as air vents.

Smart features include a storm flap over the zipper that closes with velcro tabs, a fleece chin guard, and an adjustable hood. Velcro adjustable cuffs and a drawstring hem help to keep rain and wind out.

The cut is long, ensuring good coverage, and roomy enough to get a few layers underneath.

Breathability is quite good. Most of the time I've had no problem keeping dry in the rain.

There have been a few times when I was hiking hard and sweating a lot, and the jacket couldn't keep up. But it dried out quickly when the rain stopped and I slowed down.

At 13 ounces, it isn't the lightest rain jacket available, but it's not the heaviest either. And the combination of weight, features, and price is hard to beat.

I've used my PreCip jacket a lot over the past 3 years--backpacking, camping, and in town.

Just recently, I noticed that it's starting to "wet out" quickly. I think it's time for some maintenance to restore the DWR (Durable Water Proof) coating.

Considering that I've done no maintenance besides washing it a few times, I think it's held up pretty well so far.

I would definitely recommend the Marmot PreCip rain jacket to anyone looking for a reasonably-priced, high-performance rain jacket.
